A CHIC BOHO ESCAPE TWO HOURS FROM MANHATTAN

In a charming arts village just north of New York City sits a luxury boutique hotel which curates an intimate experience that melds design from La Belle Époque, Art Deco and Mid-Century eras in celebration of those who make things—the artisans, artists, craftspeople and builders—of the Hudson region.

Located in the heart of downtown Hudson, The Maker Hotel (named after its celebration of the makers they honor) is an intimate 11-room sanctuary designed to truly transport. Created by Lev Glazman and Alina Roytberg, founders of the international beauty brand Fresh the hotel was built within 14,000 square feet of three historical buildings to bring to life this bohemian-vibed refuge.

There are no televisions on the property—instead guests are encouraged to enjoy the decor, the wealth of books supplied in collaboration with the iconic Strand Bookstore, the abundant activities and the bucolic setting in this artistic colony on the Hudson.

While the property was completely reconstructed and renovated, the three buildings that make up the hotel—an 1800s Carriage House, A Georgian Mansion, and Greek Revival building—retain many of their original elements, like ornate fireplaces in several guest rooms, wood flooring, original stained glass, and hand-painted ceilings.

Every part of The Maker is unique. The gym, which is open to the public for memberships, was inspired by Moulin Rouge, and the bar and lounge are housed in a former horse stable. In a commitment to its name and concept, all the interior-design elements within the property are created by local Hudson Valley craftsmen. Sixth-generation master furniture restorer Gary Keegan rebuilt original fireplace mantles, antiques and custom furniture; artist Michael Allen painted a mural inspired by Hudson Valley landscape on burlap in The Maker Restaurant; Glazman collaborated with Steven McKay to create custom light fixtures throughout.

Unsurprisingly for a property that leaves no detail unattended, the food and service at The Maker are world-class. Executive Chef Michael Poirkoff (formerly of 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge and Vinegar Hill House) oversees every aspect of the culinary experience, including the Parisienne-and-Viennese inspired Maker Cafe, the cocktail bar at The Maker Lounge and The Maker Restaurant in the glass-ceiling conservatory. All the food is sourced from local farms to offer seasonal, contemporary American fare.

The bohemian space—one of Caroline’s favorites—is filled with inspiring details like a stained glass window, a plaster sculpture by Frederick Weinberg, a fireplace made with restored antique furniture pieces, and a vintage painting easel.

Caroline’s other favorite room at The Maker features botanical elements combined with wrought-iron details, including the custom Maker bed and an 1870s restored Eastlake gas-lit cast iron chandelier. The cast iron and bronze grilles restored from the Beaux-Arts1908 Singer building in New York are the pièce de résistance.
